Advanced Magic Tricks

By Charley Warwick

When I was a child there was nothing that entertained me more than a magician or somebody that could do magic tricks. I had a few friends that new how to do simple card tricks and I would stand there for hours watching them do the same old tricks over and over again. Then I'd beg them to show me how they did it.

I preferred watching professional magicians because they had so many advanced magic tricks that kept me in awe and astonishment. As I grew older I started doing my own simple magic tricks to impress my friends and then to impress girls.

It was when I was sixteen that I thought maybe I could put a magical act together and maybe perform on stage. I knew I couldn't do the same old simple magic tricks that I had impressed my friends with if I wanted to perform on stage. I needed more advanced magic tricks like the professional magicians I had studied used. I needed more advanced magic tricks if I wanted to become a professional magician and make a name for myself.

I started purchasing every book I could find that explained and revealed how magic tricks worked. I also hung out at the local magic shop on Main Street hoping to meet professional magicians so maybe I could strike up a conversation with them and maybe they would give me a few pointers.

By the time I was 18, after 2 years of practicing and assembling my more advanced magic tricks I felt I was ready to perform. I had a friend who had a little brother who was having a party for his 13th birthday and I felt this would be the perfect opportunity to try out my magician's act.

I went over really big at the party. I wowed the 13 year olds using both simple and more advanced magic tricks. Over the next few years I made enough money performing my magical act at parties and small clubs that it paid for my college education.

But as time wore on I put my magic act away as I ventured into another career and married and had children. But it is funny how life goes in cycles. I have a son who is 12 years old and he is a big magic fan who can also do a few magic tricks. He has found all my old magic tricks and books that I have stored in a big box in the attic and he is fascinated with them.

He says he wants to be a magician when he grows up and he tells me he is going to call himself - Presto.
