The safest bet is always the odds on favorite but you won't get rich doing that unless you're already rich and can drop down a substantial enough dough to make the payoff worth it. And if you have that kind of dough why chance it on a horse race?

Some people like to hedge bet by betting across the board. Betting your horse to win, place or show helps hedge against the horse not finishing first. I find that hedge betting just ends up eating into your profits.

Then there are the long shot bettors. They'll bet two dollars on a long shot horse just in case it happens to finish first. This may happen once in five thousand races. But, that's okay - they'll collect their couple of hundred dollars of winnings and be proud as punch. Though, if you add it up, they have probably spent thousands of dollars on two dollar bets to win a couple of hundred. The odds just don't justify it.

My favorite bet is boxing an exacta. I find picking two horses to finish first or second in either order the most challenging and most profitable way to spend my time at a horse track. There are many other different types of bets you can make. This is just my preference.

If you go to the track regularly you probably have your own favorite type of bet and your own betting system. Playing a hunch is for suckers. Having a betting system that works is your best bet.
