"Singing has always seemed to me to be the most perfect form of expression. It is so spontaneous."
Georgia O'keefe
Oh, to sing your heart out. What a wonderful art form singing is. It makes us happy, it makes us sad. And those that do it well make us feel both at the same time.
Below are a few tips on singing and what you should know about singing.
The Instrument
Your voice is your instrument. Learn to play it like an instrument. Practice your scales over and over again. Learn as many different vocal exercises as you can. Learn as much as possible about your voice and how it works. The more you learn the more you can manipulate it. Tape your voice singing every few weeks so you can monitor your progress.
Breathing
Singing begins and ends with how you breathe. You should breathe from the diaphragm. Standing tall and erect also helps with your breathing.
Articulation
Pronounce words with clear open pure vowels.
Phrasing
It is important to communicate the story of a song. The way you phrase the lyrics makes the song come alive. Its like being an actor in a play communicating their role through the words of the author.
Stage Fright
Singing in front of people can be nerve wracking. The best 3 tips to get over stage fright are 1 - practice, practice and practice some more. If you really know your material the more at ease you will feel. Tip 2 - relaxation exercises such as aerobics, yoga and swimming helps not only relieve tension but will help your breathing as well. Tip - 3 when on stage choose one person from the audience and sing to them. Sing your heart out to them as if they are the only person there.
These are just the basic tips for singing. If you are in a choir, if you want to be a professional or if you just love singing in the shower there are many more resources available to help you sing better.
