What can you do to stop smoking? Well, first of all you have to really want to stop smoking. That's the first and most important step.

What does it take to stop smoking? It takes a great deal of will power but will power alone, for most people, won't be enough to stop smoking. Remember, nicotine is an addictive drug. Some tests have proven that nicotine is more addictive than cocaine.

So if you have decided that you really want to quit smoking here is what you can do and these are the obvious:

- the nicotine patch

- hypnosis

- nicotine gum

- prescription drugs

- cold turkey

Other things you can do:

1. Drink a lot of water when you feel the urge to smoke.

2. The act of putting something in your mouth is big part of smoking. Try sucking on an unsweetened sucker, or candies or gum. The best would be raw vegetables such as carrots and celery.

3. Reward yourself. Imagine the money you will save after a single month of not smoking? Add it up. After the first month of not smoking treat yourself to something that would have cost the same price as the cigarettes you didn't smoke.

If you need help - get it. There are support groups for people trying to quit smoking just as there are support groups for people trying to quit other drug substances.

Find a support group or maybe just a close friend or relative that you can go to or call when a really overwhelming urge to smoke arises. This gives you somebody to talk to and somebody to help talk you out of smoking.

There are plenty of books out there on quitting smoking. Read as much as you can and educate yourself on the different stop smoking methods.

What can you do to stop smoking? You can do everything. But you have to really want to stop smoking.
